To Protect Our Reefs, Together.>
Equipping the next generation of Maldivian children with hands-on coral reef survey skills — building citizen scientists who understand, protect, and care for the ocean around them.
Faru Foshi is an environmental education NGO focused on protecting the marine environment of the Maldives. Formed with a strong belief in fostering a connection to the environment at a young age, the NGO has created an educational toolkit based on coral reef survey methods that teach citizen science techniques hands-on.
To increase the number of local citizen scientists and create a platform for them to share their findings. The project aims to be the first reef-specific practical toolkit of its kind in the Maldives — equipping children and youth with the tools and knowledge to conduct real coral reef surveys.
Most Maldivian children and youth are not aware that the country holds the world's 7th largest coral reef system. Without understanding the marine ecosystem surrounding us, younger generations struggle to develop a genuine connection to it. As the Maldives relies almost solely on these reefs for life, livelihood, and security, it is vital that every generation has access to the knowledge required to deeply understand and protect them. Faru Foshi aims to build a foundation of context-based environmental awareness and a demystified view of the scientific process — regardless of the future career path of participants.
